Appraisal Surveys
An appraisal survey gathers sufficient information to determine the fair market value of the boat/vessel. This survey is usually required to resolve legal matters such as divorce, estate distribution, financing, donations, or tax issues.
JW Marine Surveyors hold multiple certifications through the ASA (American Society of Appraisers) for Yacht & Small craft appraising. We utilize the most up to date appraisal tools and techniques available to the surveying industry to obtain the most ethically accurate value possible for your boat.
Insurance Surveys
For the vessel’s owner, an insurance survey differs from a Pre-purchase survey in that some vessels are inspected while on the hard in a shipyard, precluding a sea trial and engine operation. Other vessels may be inspected in the water only; the insurance company may or may not request that the boat be hauled for a hull inspection or taken on a sea trial. Insurance companies are interested mainly in the structural integrity and safety and fitness of the vessel for a specific intended use.
Insurance companies often require the boat be surveyed by an accredited marine surveyor, and our surveyors are fully licensed and accredited through ACMS, and USSA/Navtech. We are a fully approved and recognized marine surveying company by the American Institute of Marine Underwriters. We are certified in Inland & Ocean Marine Insurance claims through the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance.
Condition &Valuation Survey (Pre-Purchase)
A pre-purchase survey is a comprehensive inspection of all accessible areas of the vessel including hull structure, plumbing and electrical systems, an external inspection of engines and air handlers. This inspection is usually conducted both afloat and out of the water, in slings or on blocks. A critical component of this inspection is a short sea trial so that all systems can be observed in operation.
JW Marine Surveyors can perform engine inspections. If a more comprehensive engine inspection is desired on of our engine surveyors can be retained. JW Marine Surveyors can supply contact information for engine mechanics and engine surveyors, but it is the sole responsibility of each interested party to choose surveyors and mechanics.
